Justice

In two days there have been two fatal shootings in this country.  In one, five police officers are dead, three men are in custody, and one is dead.  In the other, one black man is dead and the police officer who shot him, on video, is on paid administrative leave.  How is that fair?  How is that justice?  That the people who are supposed to keep our country safe can shoot a man on video and not be punished.  But when those same people are the victims they will stop at nothing to prosecute to the full extent of the law.

Now it is not that I find that prosecution unfair.  It is not that I think that the deaths of those police officers is not a tragedy or that those people do not deserve to be punished.  It is the complete lack of caring and utter injustice that was shown by the police officers when it is one of their own who is the culprit.

How can we live in a country like this?  Where status and position determine the extent of the punishment.  Where a police officer can kill a man and receive paid leave, where a college athlete can rape a girl and receive 6 months.

Above the Supreme Court of the United States of America are the words “equal justice under the law”.  This is not equal justice.  This is not OK.  This needs to end.
